It’s always a great feeling when you open the door to a hotel room and are impressed by what’s on the other side.  This was the case for me when I caught a glimpse of the view of London’s city skyline from my room at Motel One, Tower Hill.  In a city where accommodation is notoriously extortionate, it’s fantastic that you can get a great room for much less than you might expect.

Location

Motel One is located in central London, in Tower Hill, literally a two-minute walk away from Aldgate underground station.  It’s located within close proximity to the Tower of London and other major attractions.

The Bed

The box-sprung king-size bed is ultra-comfortable with Egyptian cotton sheets.  Literally all of the room’s fixtures, including the bed, are imported directly from Germany.

The Bathroom

The bathroom is compact but has all of the essentials.  It’s modern, immaculately clean and features dark granite surfaces, a monsoon shower, as well as thick fluffy towels.

Other Mod-Cons

The room comes equipped with a hairdryer and of course an all-important kettle.  There are plenty of light fixtures and power sockets throughout. There’s also easy to connect WIFI and if you happen to forget your laptop or tablet, you can borrow an Ipad at reception, free of charge.

The One Lounge is characterised by its turquoise and chocolate decor, leather armchairs and glistening chandeliers.  It’s a social space that’s open 24/7 where you can grab a coffee or cocktail, hang out or work. There’s no room service and the One Lounge food menu is basic, so I would suggest going out for dinner in the city – which most people tend to do anyway.

The View

The City View rooms are flooded with light by the floor to ceiling windows and there are incredible views of London’s city skyline from all angles.  You can see London’s most iconic sights from the comfort of your own bed, including the Gherkin, the Walkie Talkie, the Cheese Grater and the Shard.

Breakfast

The continental breakfast is taken in the One Lounge, which can be added to the booking.  The selection includes pastries, cold meats and cheeses and cereal, as well as fresh coffee.

If you are looking for an affordable hotel in central London, there’s really no need to look elsewhere –  Motel One simply can’t be beaten, with rooms from £98.  The hotel is modern, slick and attractive – it feels like a luxury hotel, without the price tag.  I’ve stayed in many more expensive London hotels that have been nowhere near as pleasant.

I’m so impressed with the unique concept behind Motel One.  Everything about the hotel is streamlined to keep prices rock bottom whilst maintaining a high level of quality – all aspects of the hotel are standardised across all of its European properties.  It’s no-nonsense accommodation and Motel One gets a 10/10 from me.  I would definitely book with them again, be it in the UK or another country.
